CBS' FIR students receive top ranking in Global IRC

After having won the Danish competition in CFA Institute’s Global Investment Research Challenge at the end of November 2010, CBS' equity analyst team gave another fantastic performance during the EMEA finals in Madrid at the beginning of March.

The five CBS students: Morten Lindtner, Mads Lyder Iversen, Fie Aalund Larsen, Anne Meyer Nielsen og Robin Andersen Patel beat their colleagues from Københavns Universitet, Aarhus Handelshøjskole and Lunds Universitet in the Danish finals. This put them through to the next stage in the competition. The students received tickets to Global IRC March 3rd and flew to Madrid in order to represent CBS and the Danish colours.

21 teams from the whole EMEA region participated in the competition and CBS won the semifinals by beating 5 teams from Bahrain, Hungary, Ukraine, Germany and Finland. In the finals they were up against the winners from the three other groups: Sweden, Spain and Italy. Here Politecnico di Milano won by a small margin, which put them through to the finals in Omaha, Nebraska. In this final one team from each of the three regions: EMEA, The Americas and Asia Pacific competes for the world championship. And yes, the winners will meet the investment guru of them all: Warren Buffett.

"There was a large number of investment professionals from the whole EMEA region who participated and they were very impressed with our team, which was a favourite for many," says Keld Lundberg Holm, who is the director of CFA Denmark and The Danish Society of Financial Analysts, which arranges the Danish competition.

"We have had a fantastic experience and learnt a lot," says Fie Aalund Larsen. "We had incredibly good teamwork but it also required a lot of time and energy, especially when we had to write the report and prepare our presentations. But with the result we got it has all been worth it. Furthermore the team's members have also received job offers after participating in the competition," she adds with a smile.

CFA Institute’s Global Investment Research Challenge is a competition, where teams from universities and business schools from all over the world write a report based on equity research and company analysis as if they are practicing analysts. Each team has to write a 10 page analysis based on a company, which must then be presented and argued for in front of the judges, who are professional stock analysts.

The competition gives the participants a unique opportunity to meet students from other leading schools and universities and to get feedback from professional investment experts from home and abroad. The competition promotes the standard of financial analysis and propagates best practice to the new generation of analysts, by letting them conduct a realistic analysis and having contact to companies and professional investors.

CFA Institute is, together with the local societies, responsible for arranging the yearly competition, which this year has had more than 2,500 participants from over 500 institutions of higher education across the world. CFA Institute is mostly known for the demanding training as Chartered Financial Analyst, CFA ®, which is considered a gold standard for the training of investment professionals. With more than 100,000 charterholders and more than 135 local societies spread over the whole world, CFA Institute is the leading, global organisation for investment professionals. Denmark has approximately 160 charterholders.
